Ramblings

I met up with the new landlords last night at a local Starb**ks to go over the lease one more time and make sure everything is in order.  They’re really nice - we get along well and I like that they’re being thorough and responsible.  It probably helps that we’re the same age.  We chatted for a good hour, after which the conversation was pretty loose and I think we all felt reassured having gotten to know each other a little better.  “Do you like The Darcys?”  The evening seemed to confirm what we already felt.

The actual move-in date is unknown yet.  The place is mine officially on the 15th, although I need to pick up some furniture this weekend.  I also need to order hydro (electricity) and internet yet.  I’m going to hold off on cable and having a TV for a while.  Honestly, I haven’t really sat down and watched TV for a long time, and I don’t miss it.  I may miss watching DVDs on something bigger than my laptop, but I’ll see how it goes.  If, by September it’s really bugging me, I’ll break down and get one.

There’s a mama pigeon sitting on two eggs in a plant pot on my balcony at the new place.  I’ve agreed to let her stay there until the little ones hatch and can fly away, at which point I’ll take the pot away so they don’t stay forever.  So you can expect some tender-hearted National Geographic-type photos soon.  Also, in no way am I going to feed them.  The pigeon population on my balcony would double.

If she won’t pay rent… ask her for her first born… by the time you pay rent, you may desperate enough to eat pigeon… :)

Well, rents ARE expensive these days. Avg. in Vancouver is now $800-1000/month for a one-bedroom. And that doesn’t guarantee laundry or utilities. In fact, I saw a lot of ads for ground-level suites that were asking for $850 and said “near laundromat.” Even shared laundry is hard to come by now.

I was pretty lucky. I’d give up a one-bedroom for a bachelor suite with in-suite laundry (and a dishwasher!) any day of the week. Not to mention living one block from a major supermarket that’s open until midnight.

I discovered the joy of ‘drop-off’ laundry last week. Why do your own when you can pay someone to do it for you? In suite laundry is nice - but man - not having to do laundry at all rules.

I wish I could outsource MY laundry. Such a chore.
