I recently acquired the 50th anniversary version of Robert Frank’s collection of photos entitled The Americans. It’s very cool. This reissue is part of a project that Steidl publishers have undertaken in cooperation with Frank himself (who is supervising everything) to reprint many of his old works as special editions. For this new issue of The Americans, for instance, Frank and his publishers went back to the original negatives and did fresh high-res scans. In the process, they restored many of the photographs to their original, uncropped versions - many of which have never been seen until now.
The series of reprints will continue through 2009, and will include Looking In: Robert Frank’s The Americans, an in-depth history of the reinterpretations and deconstructions of Frank’s best-known text.
